Welcome to The Interim.
When the operators of [REDACTED] hit the ‘on’ switch for the first time in a century, things don’t go exactly as planned. Namely, you weren’t supposed to happen.
But here you are. An interloper from another world, dumped into this one with nothing but the clothes on your back….and just about anything else you were touching that wasn't nailed down. Problem is, interdimensional transportation isn't cheap; and in a world with limited resources, you just used up an awful lot of resources.
The portal you came through was a one-way trip...at least for now. A malfunctioning piece of technology brought you here, and it's in your best interests that it get back into working order, or you won't be seeing home anytime soon. Unfortunately, you are not welcomed into this world with open arms. In fact, you are seen as something of a burden, and will be expected to earn your keep. Luckily, you're being offered a job; [REDACTED] is happy to pay you to do work, and at a good rate. So what's the catch?
There's a reason these positions are open, and the reason is that they are dangerous, dirty jobs. The jobs normal people don't want to do. But they are jobs that pay, and coincidentally, are helping to get things back up and running, which is good for everyone. [REDACTED] is a resource stripped world, in bad need of repairs, and full of bigger problems than taking care of a few straggling immigrants. In order to get the portals repaired and get back home, it's in your best interest to help. Whether that's gathering supplies, fixing a broken communications tower, or something far more outlandish, they say jump' and you say…...'I guess'.
But there's something wrong with the world you've stumbled into...and it's more than just the economy. Time flows funny, physics don't always work, and sometimes the walls seem a little thin, if you catch the drift. The consequences of interdimensional travel might be a little steeper than just airfare. You might not want to stay here for any longer than you have to.
And you're welcome to ask about your predecessors but...do you really want to know? After all, you've got a job to do.
